L’épreuve de l’injustice

« Si le mot “inégalité” ne vous fait pas tressaillir, peut-être serez-vous plus sensibles au mot “injustice” ». Ainsi commençait en mars 2006 un appel lancé par la Fondation Abbé Pierre pour le logement des défavorisés dans cinq grands quotidiens français. Au-delà de la situation particulière du logement social dans ce pays, cette exhorte traduit un changement significatif : le constat d’un glissement des inégalités sociales vers les injustices sociales sur l’agenda socio-politique. Si demeure la question de fond du moment à partir duquel une inégalité devient une injustice, force est en effet de constater une tendance lourde, celle de l’expression croissante des problèmes sociaux sous l’angle de l’injustice. Comment comprendre pourtant pourquoi, aujourd’hui, l’expérience sociale se donne à voir comme une suite d’épreuves individuelles ? En quoi la transformation des inégalités, leur “individualisation”, à tout le moins l’attention portée aux inégalités dynamiques affectant les trajectoires sociales des individus, participent-elles à alimenter le sentiment d’injustice devant les évènements qui affectent nombre de nos concitoyens ? Dans quelle mesure cette centration sur les épreuves individuelles, souvent lues sous le prisme de l’injustice quand elles se retournent contre soi, alimente-elle une logique victimaire, faisant de la victime le centre de l’attention publique ?
C’est à l’examen de la place aujourd’hui prise par l’injustice dans l’expérience individuelle comme sur la scène sociale qu’invite ce nouveau cycle de conférences publiques organisé par la Chaire de Travail social et politiques sociales. Il s’attachera notamment à éclairer les enjeux d’une thématisation des problèmes sociaux sous la figure de l’injustice.

Le livre
Ce livre aborde un thème rarement évoqué dans les recherches, les documentaires ou les débats sur la prison : les proches des personnes détenues. Ils sont pourtant plus d’un demi-million en France a avoir un parent, un conjoint, un enfant, un frère ou une sœur en prison. L’enquête de terrain s’est déroulée sur plusieurs années. Elle s’est d’abord effectuée auprès d’anciens détenus ayant été incarcérés pour des durées très variables, et libérés depuis plus ou moins longtemps, puis auprès de personnes détenues. Cinq établissements pénitentiaires (Bapaume, Caen, Pau, Clairvaux, Les Baumettes) ont été retenus pour leur diversité : taille, localisation, régime carcéral et profil de la population carcérale. L’auteur y a rencontré des hommes, des femmes, quelques mineurs, des prévenus, des condamnés et quelques « innocents », des français et des étrangers. Les types de délits ou crimes (et de longueur de peine) étaient très divers. Des expériences de la prison très différentes sont donc évoquées : de celle d’Estelle, jeune primaire, consommatrice d’héroïne, incarcérée depuis trois jo
